Hyaluronic acid used in skincare to give skin a plump and hydrated appearance

Hyaluronic Acid in skincare

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found throughout the body’s connective tissue. Glycosaminoglycans are long unbranched sugars, or carbohydrates, known as polysaccharides.

Hyaluronic Acid benefits in skincare

Our natural hyaluronic acid is able to bind 1000 times it’s weight in water and gives our skin it’s plump and hydrated appearance by holding water molecules onto the skin preventing Transepidermal Water Loss (this is the measure of water lost from the skin). It is the main component which gives your skin it’s structure and plays a role in wound healing. When we are young we have high levels of hyaluronic acid however this decreases leaving our skin less well hydrated and a little less plump looking.

The formulation of hyaluronic acid is very important.  The concentration and molecular weight (size of the molecule) of the product determine it’s ability to penetrate the skin. Studies have shown that lower molecular weights ( under 500kDa) have increased absorption into the skin. Whereas larger molecules, with a molecular weight greater than 500 kDa, have a more difficult time passing through the skin barrier. Skin Sculpt Optimised Hyaluronic Acid Serum serum has a molecular weight of 2-10kDa. This not only deeply hydrates but penetrates to the dermis to stimulate collagen.Hyaluronic Acid in skincare
